Magical Marrakech

Seeing sunset over Jemaa el-Fna square while listening to snake charmers, smelling delicious tajine and drinking Moroccan mint tea…

Marrakech has a spirit. Don’t be afraid to get lost in the streets of colorful souks.

Ives Saint Laurent said that Marrakech taught him color. “The Red City” is made up of two main parts, the new town and the old town, medina. Buildings are colored salmon pink and give warm feeling. Jemaa el-Fna is the heart of Marrakech.

The square is crowded with street sellers, snake charmers and street food stalls. The smell of food is intense and food itself is definitely worth to try.

Typical dish is tajine consisting of meat, vegetables and spices cooked together very slowly. Each place offers different type of tajine and there are also options for vegetarians or pescetarians.

In Marrakech you have to forget about maps. Free yourself, follow the streets that attract you, do not rush yourself. People are very friendly; they will try to sell you everything you look at. They like to negotiate about prices and they start with very high initial price. You have to play their game, make jokes and take your time.

Souks, the markets, are the best part of Marrakech. They seem to be very busy, but you just have to embrace their vibe. City itself is not dangerous. Men like to flirt with women but they are not annoying. It is all about an attitude you give them back.

Traveling in Marrakech might be a bit tricky. Taxi drivers are trying their luck and your first ride might be overpriced. Next one you have to offer lower price and if they do not accept it, you have to look for other taxi. If the price was still favorable for them, they will look for you before you find new taxi driver. Traveling at night is little bit more expensive.

Busy and noisy life in Marrakech is a contrast to how easy you can calm down, relax and enjoy your tea. Sweet mint tea is like a dessert and it is best to drink with a nice view.

There are many rooftop places in Marrakech, the best are in Jemaa el-Fna square and in Souk Zrabi (Nomad and Café des Epices).

Food on streets tastes just as delicious as food in some restaurants and sometimes even better.

If you like to smoke a hookah and have a view from balcony on Jemaa el-Fna that is not possible as there is a mosque and it is allowed to smoke only in closed places. Restaurant Le Marrakchi offers hookah in their menu and place is truly beautiful.

One of the places to visit is Marrakech Museum in city centre. Building features an internal riad (courtyard) and shows Moroccan art and typical Andalusian design.

Accommodation in Marrakech is easy to find. Many people recommend riads due to their location in city center and cozy Moroccan design. New part of town offers variety of hotels with pools and gardens.

Marrakech will calm you down. Pink sunset over Atlas Mountains and colorful carpets hanging from roofs simply make you forget all your problems.
